Originally published at When the Sh*t Hits the Fan. You can comment here or there.

It always diminishes the lure, creativity, and “special”ness of whatever it was.
Whether we are talking about case-mods, wardriving, “going green” or in the case of what irked me, body modification, it all tends to be the same.

Once the sheeple get involved and it is mundane, then everyone is an expert, every dumbass who has some money thinks they understand the point, or that they even *have* a point.

With body modification, any man who got an earring or any person who got something pierced other than ears as little as 20 years ago was a little bit off. military and criminals got tattoos. But as it got to be more accepted it all got…

cleaner

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I personally like not having hepatitis. I can appreciate the sterility of a clean and well run shop. But it also has turned everyone into pussies of a sort. If you don’t do everything the way the hive mind says then you’d better already be at the forefront of new creative techniques, otherwise you are just a dumbass tard. To quote a response to a post in which I was defending a girl’s choice to do things with her own body the way she wanted -

“however, if you’re just being a retard on purpose, you make the rest of us look bad.”

really? wow. When did what I did to my body ever have anything to do with what other people were doing to theirs?

Why the hell *would* you change your body if you were thinking about what other people thought? That’s an even scarier proposition when you consider the fluctuation of norms within a society. I’m curious - any of you who read this. Why *do* you modify your body? is it purely aesthetic? is it because all of your friends do it? is it for a spiritual purpose, or some other extravagant or mundane reason?

I’ll start - I put holes in and ink on my body for two reason. One - I do like it aesthetically. This is why I like shapes better than things in tattoos. I always love the look of a well drawn line - not so much for some band or movie. More importantly, it is a way for me to personally show mental dominance over my body. a 4 hour session of tattooing or sticking piercing needles through your dork may be easy for some people. For me it isn’t, but it is like my own personal gom-jabbar. I do it for me, and while I am pleased in a narcissistic sort of way if someone appreciates it, if someone *doesn’t* like it I’m not affronted.

So, how about you?

so, last week a hosting company got outed for hosting a vast majority of a huge botnet that did dDoS and spam. It was not a thing done through the courts, just a lot of investigation and then posting the information publicly so that that hosting companies bandwidth providers shut them off.

yay, score 1 for the good guys.

Unfortunately my company is implicated as the bad guys, and that we host lots of evil badness.

We resell bandwidth to a 3rd party. and they resell bandwidth to their customers. We keep the IP information pointing to us as owners so when abuse complaints come in we can deal with them. We are rather proactive on this issue, actually.

But because we own the IPs, the whole thing came back like we were supporting the issue of a circuit bought over a year ago by the customer of a customer that was used to transfer control of the botnet over to Russia:/

blargh.

They did all that research, and didn't get it right - not only that, I can only assume they think we do it intentionally. Instead of contacting us to do something about it, they did all the research and then just released it publicly. We found out we were implicated a week later because of a post on a message board!

And so far, my company hasn't done a single thing as far as a press release or damage control.

grrrr

How do we manage to stay so busy?

Don't people realize I'm pretty lazy? :P

Frida night was snooshi with Diane at Sakana. I think, though I like sakana, there are much less crowded places to go on a friday, so I'll save them for a tuesday or something.

Saturday I wasn't able to have my tattoo appt. because the artist wasn't ready. So we rescheduled for Sunday. Good thing too.

I got to play some warhammer, then we went and ate with some friends and went to see Paranous and The Spider Hole at the Big Fish Pub. Holy shit - the gals weren't kidding. 5 or more years ago when I'd heard the spider hole, I just didn't like it. It's pretty cool now, with a decidedly sinister-circus sound. I had hoped to still go to Velocity, but the show didn't get out til 1:/

Sunday we got up, cleaned up, and spent all day the tattoo shop. I don't know how diane didn't implode from boredom, but it was a good 7 hours there. But a productive 7 hours! got the stencil all finished and applied, then she tattooed all the outline so she won't have to re-stencil. After coming home and eating some taco bell I was beat and was back in bed by 10. Slept like a baby!

Tonight we're going to see Electric 6 at the clubhouse, then Wednesday is Reliquary playing at Mardi Gras.

Diane has expressed interest in the Faerie festival on saturday as well, so we may well be out there too.

Weekend after that? Looks like Vegas, for at least one friend and I - hopefully I can get that friday off and we can bail put of phx early, but my boss is also out of town all next week, so it may not get approved.

What have you guys been up to?
